Wilhelm Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Tennessee
Karen Hasty is the George Thomas Wilhelm Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Hasty has earned widespread recognition for her work focusing on the understanding of the degradation of the arthritic joint. Her current research is preventing the destruction of the arthritic joint, growing new cartilage from stem cells isolated from periosteal tissues and bone marrow and re-implanting these back into experimental models of osteoarthritis and intervertebral degeneration.
Her research has been funded by grants from the Arthritis Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Veterans Affairs and Memphis-based orthopaedic companies, Smith & Nephew and Medtronic. She has published numerous articles in the top medical research journals.
