Message from the Chairman
Chairman, Board of Trustees
On behalf of the Board of Trustees of The Campbell Foundation, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our website. I invite you to learn about the mission and the important work of The Campbell Foundation -- to enhance the quality of life for our patients today and of future generations. This statement puts the emphasis squarely on the patient, just as Dr. Willis C. Campbell did when he founded Campbell Clinic almost 100 years ago and just as the doctors and staff do today.
You will also meet several of our patients, whose stories capture the importance of what our doctors, scientists, and young physicians in training do every day to improve the lives of the patients we serve. Their stories are inspiring and give hope to each of us, since we and our loved ones may one day face the musculoskeletal problems that often accompany a long and active life.
The Critical Need
Did you know that musculoskeletal disease and injury is the leading cause of disability in the United Sates and the number one reason for doctor visits? One in seven Americans has a muscular or skeletal impairment, and one in three is affected by arthritis. A fracture requiring orthopeadic treatment occurs approximately every 14 seconds in the U.S. and half of all Americans will be treated for a fracture bone prior to their 65th birthday.
Conditions such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, back pain, spinal disorders, fractures, and overuse soft tissue injuries affect millions of people - problems that are predicted to double in the next 20 years with the aging of the 77 million baby boomers. Many children also suffer from crippling bone and joint diseases, impeding normal development and preventing them from leading full and healthy lives.
It is clear that the need for new discoveries into the causes, treatments and cures of musculoskeletal disease has never been greater.
Our Mission and Goals
Since our founding in 1946, The Campbell Foundation has remained committed to advancing orthopaedic medicine throughout the world, through surgeon education, musculoskeletal research, and community healthcare.
We will continue to focus our efforts on:
- Strengthening one of the country’s most distinguished orthopaedic residency and fellowship programs.
- Launching promising research and bringing new solutions for debilitating problems to our patients.
- Investing in our community’s health by providing orthopaedic care for children and adults, regardless of their financial circumstances.
Many of you have joined us in our efforts and we thank you for your generous support. Together, we will continue to make progress toward enhancing the quality of life for our patients today and for generations to come.
