Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics
Almost 75 years ago, Dr. Willis C. Campbell set down in longhand his vast knowledge of orthopaedics in a volume he called Textbook on Orthopaedic Surgery. The first edition of Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics was published in 1939. The book has been revised and updated every five to seven years and translated into seven languages.
The four-volume textbook contains over 4,000 pages featuring updates on more than 1,800 procedures. More than 9,000 drawings, diagnostic images, and clinical photographs are included in the book. Medical professionals throughout the United States and around the world often refer to Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics as "the bible of orthopaedic surgery".
The 11th edition of Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics was published in December 2007. The 11th edition marks the first time the book will be printed in full color, which allows for better depiction of intra-operative photographs and the use of color to denote emphasis in illustrations and graphics. An on-line edition of the book and the videos will be available on the Internet.
New material in the 11th edition covers includes discussions of minimally-invasive approaches to total hip and total knee replacement, information on low-profile implants for fracture fixation, descriptions of new devices for spine instrumentation, in-depth commentary on new bone grafting materials, and details on expanded use of arthroscopy and endoscopy. The 11th edition also includes two CD-ROMS, one of which presents video clips of Campbell Clinic surgeons demonstrating key procedures.
The Campbell Foundation provides all the research, editorial, graphics, and clerical support for the publication. The text is written entirely by Campbell Clinic surgeons, with 23 of the Clinic's physicians contributing to the 11th edition. Dr. Terry Canale and Dr. James Beaty are the book's editors.
Thge 12th Edition of Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics, will be published in 2013.
