Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics
Almost 75 years ago, Dr. Willis C. Campbell set down in longhand his vast knowledge of orthopaedics in a volume he called Textbook on Orthopaedic Surgery. This became the first edition of Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics, published in 1939. The book has been revised and updated by Campbell Clinic staff members every five to seven years and has been translated into seven languages. Medical professionals throughout the United States and around the world often refer to Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics as "the bible of orthopaedic surgery."
The current Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics, the 12th edition, consists of four-volumes containing over 4,000 pages with descriptions of 1,630 procedures. Nearly 7,000 pieces of completely re-drawn art, diagnostic images, and clinical photographs illustrate orthopaedic conditions and their treatment. New material in the 12th edition includes discussions of minimally-invasive approaches to total hip and total knee replacement, information on low-profile implants for fracture fixation, descriptions of new devices for spine instrumentation, in-depth commentary on new bone grafting materials, and details on expanded use of arthroscopy and endoscopy. The entire textbook, including illustrations and 45 videos of operative procedures, will be accessible on-line.
The Campbell Foundation provides all the research, editorial, graphics, and clerical support for the publication. The text is written entirely by Campbell Clinic surgeons, with 39 of the Clinic's physicians contributing to the 12th edition. As noted by Dr. Terry Canale and Dr. James Beaty, the book's editors, the purpose of the book remains unchanged from Dr. Campbell’s vision: to present up-to-date reliable information that allows orthopaedic specialists to provide the best of care to their patients.
“Because many surgeons, here and abroad, depend on Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics to bring them the best information to help them treat their patients, our staff members feel an obligation to make every edition the best it can be.”
